The renowned World Cup victor, Jenni Hermoso’s on-air statement has shocked viewers and fans across the globe. Previously given to the prosecutors a month prior, it was significantly broadcasted on national Spanish TV recounting an unfortunate incident that occurred after the final of the tournament. Hermoso has accused the former head of Spanish football of non-consensually kissing her on the lips.

Hermoso’s account, now publicly heard in her authentic voice, mentions her discomfort and sense of disrespect as both an individual and a player. Luis Rubiales, the accused, has rejected the allegations of sexual assault and coercion, which eventually led to his resignation amidst the unrest.

The exceptional episode has triggered the legal machinery. An investigative judge has undertaken a preliminary investigation of the allegations, aiming to determine if the case is apt for trial. Furthermore, the National Court has amplified its investigation, scrutinizing other officials of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF).

Hermoso’s statement, recorded and then aired on the Telecinco channel, voiced her disappointment over the RFEF’s failure to safeguard her. As an employee of the federation, she felt disregarded. She has recalled the disturbing incident which occurred in Sydney, Australia as Spain rejoiced their Women’s World Cup victory last August, unfortunately overshadowed by the unwarranted kiss of the federation president.

Hermoso narrated her exchange with Rubiales during their match celebration. After expressing their mutual happiness for their win, Rubiales, she says gripped her head and forcefully kissed her, leaving her utterly shocked and disturbed.

Hermoso has also shared under significant duress, the pressure she was subjected to after the incident that forced her to stay away from Madrid. The athlete revealed that while she confided the incident to colleagues, Alexia Putellas and Irene Paredes, she carefully avoided public attention.

Interestingly, she mentions being approached by football federation officials who asked her to leave the team bus and sign a statement to the world media, implying that the interaction was mutual. Hermoso firmly negates doing so and paints the incidence as another act of coercion.

Hermoso also reveals the continued attempts by the federation figures to influence her stance, even on a celebratory trip to Ibiza. Rubén Rivera, the RFEF’s marketing director, also faces similar allegations as Rubiales. After the ordeal, Hermoso, a native of Madrid returned to Mexican club Pachuca, where she has become a pivotal asset in Mexico’s Liga MX.
In the wake of everything, Rubiales’ resignation, although significant, doesn’t rectify Hermoso’s experiences. Investigations will continue to probe the incident, in hopes to bring the truth to the table.
