This week, Wondr Nation – the interactive gaming division of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation – confirmed a substantial gift dedicated to sustaining responsible gaming research at Connecticut’s premier academic institution, University of Connecticut. This online gaming concern, a branch of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, will endow $250K to University of Connecticut’s School of Medicine for nurturing responsible gaming studies.
The Mashantucket Pequots, owners and operators of the Foxwoods Resort Casino, gave birth to Wondr Nation in May 2022. This was a result of Connecticut’s decision to permit its two federally acknowledged tribes to govern online gaming. The expansion of the Mashantucket Pequots – along with the Mohegan Tribe – paved the way for Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun to venture into iGaming, retail, and mobile sports betting.
Wondr Nation, under the aegis of DraftKings, operates Foxwoods’ cost-free social casino FoxwoodsONLINE. Collaborating closely with DraftKings, they seek to create fresh offerings while also launching sports betting operations at Foxwoods El San Juan Casino in Puerto Rico.
Foxwoods, being a major tribal run casino, acknowledges its public obligation towards encouraging responsible play. Traditionally, the Mashantucket Tribe has been dispatching funds to responsible gaming programs, a commitment retained by Wondr Nation. Most recently, in April, a $300K per annum contribution was made to the Connecticut Council on Problem Gambling (CCPG) which works tirelessly to combat problem gambling via education, prevention, and increasing awareness.
This week, Wondr Nation further committed to responsible gaming by endowing a $250K grant to University of Connecticut’s School of Medicine to foster the study of responsible gaming best practices. The aim is to nurture non-problematic play while curtailing hazardous behaviors.
