In a peculiar and unsettling event in Las Vegas, a 47-year-old woman named Patricia Sierra has been taken into custody for stealing a coffin containing a body from a funeral home. The bizarre incident occurred on August 27, when surveillance footage captured Sierra breaking into Affordable Cremation & Burial, located at 2127 W. Charleston Blvd, at around 3:30 a.m.
The footage shows Sierra shattering a window to gain entry and then unlocking the funeral home’s front door. She proceeded to wheel the casket out of the viewing room and exit the premises. Surprisingly, she abandoned the body in the landscaping in front of the facility and left the empty coffin next to it before fleeing the scene.
A passerby discovered the unsettling scene and called 911, prompting police to respond. They quickly identified the deceased through paperwork found next to the casket. The deceased had arrived at the funeral home on August 20 and had a viewing a day before the theft and subsequent dumping.
When apprehended by police two days later at a convenience store, Sierra admitted to police that she had no recollection of the incident. She claimed she had consumed six beers and often blacks out when she drinks, insisting she was “not trying to be malicious” and expressed regret over her actions.
Sierra is facing serious charges, including burglary, grand larceny, and disturbing human remains. A judge has set her bail at $11,000, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for September 18. As of Wednesday, Patricia Sierra remains in custody.
The case has drawn significant attention due to its unusual and alarming nature, leaving the community and authorities puzzled by Sierra’s motives and actions.
