Almost a year since a fatal crash claimed the life of a 17-year-old in St. Vital, Winnipeg police have taken into custody an individual implicated in the unfortunate event. The driver, who was 18 when the tragedy unfolded, is facing charges of criminal negligence resulting in death.
The calamitous event in question unfolded on the evening of Oct. 18, 2022, at the intersection of St. Mary’s Road and Guay Avenue. A vivid recounting of the event is brought to life by security footage provided at the time, which clearly shows the vehicle hurtling down St. Mary’s Road before swerving erratically, evidently losing control.
The Winnipeg Police Service reported that the car met a utility pole with such impact, citing excessive speed and reckless driving as primary factors contributing to the tragic outcome.
The teenagers, both in dire straits, were immediately rushed to the hospital. Regrettably, the passenger, merely 17, was pronounced dead shorty after their arrival.
Fast forward to Oct. 6, 2023, the now 19-year-old driver found himself in the clutches of the law enforcement officers from the traffic division. It’s worthwhile to note that the charges levied against him are yet to be examined in court.
The young man implicated in this case has since been released from custody, their fate resting uncertain until due process is served.
