The Jewish and Palestinian communities within Winnipeg reel in the wake of a sudden strike unleashed on Israel by Hamas militants early Saturday morning.

Jeff Lieberman, CEO of the Jewish Federation of Winnipeg, voices his shock and despair, “It seemed surreal – a horrific act that was difficult to comprehend.”

The turmoil in Israel has resulted in death, injury, and numerous hostages, impacting hundreds of people. Unavoidably, there are direct ramifications for people in Winnipeg, but the specific details of these effects were not divulged by the Jewish Federation of Winnipeg.

Gustavo Zentner, president of the Jewish Federation of Winnipeg, confirms that their organization is already dealing with the repercussions. “We are becoming aware of people within our community who are reaching out to us, seeking support to contact their loved ones in the crisis zone,” he said.

Zentner remarks that several young people with Winnipeg ties currently traveling in Israel have been reported missing. “These are worrying times for everyone,” he said.

The Federation has denounced the deadly conflict, avowing their full support and solidarity with Israel. They have been in touch with representatives of all tiers of government who have pledged an unwavering support for the Jewish community during this crisis.

Manitoba’s current Premier Heather Stefanson and Premier-elect Wab Kinew issued statements on Saturday decrying the act of terrorism while upholding Israel’s right to self-defense.

Concurrently, the president of the Canadian Palestinian Association of Manitoba, Ramsey Zeid, was not taken aback by Hamas’ assault. Zeid opines, “When people are pushed into a corner, it’s only a matter of time before they react in defence.”

Zeid reveals he has been targeted by backlash in Winnipeg as a direct result of the conflict in Israel. The prejudices he has faced even include accusatory calls and messages, labeling him and his family terrorists and calling for severe action against Gaza.

“It’s unfair to stereotype all Palestinians as terrorists,” Zeid states. “The average Palestinian simply wants to lead a peaceful life, provide for their families and go about their daily routines.”

Zeid hopes for a peaceful resolution but expresses fear that the conflict is far from being resolved. “Everyone is worried. The situation is poised to escalate and become a lot worse. Innocent lives on both sides stand at risk,” he said.

The Jewish Federation of Winnipeg plans to host a solidarity gathering for Israel on Tuesday, Oct. 10, at 7 pm at the Asper Jewish Community Campus, 123 Doncaster Street. The gathering will serve as a beacon of support and unity during these difficult times.
