The following is message from the non-profit organization, West Island Mission regarding the new modifications to their Christmas operations.
“We are living in uncertain times and 2020 has presented challenges to us all, no matter who we are and where we live. The last 8 months at West Island Mission have been very busy ones, however we have managed to adjust and continue to serve those struggling with financial issues; even more so at this time.
The Christmas season is fast approaching and if you are receiving this email it’s because in past years, you have been one of the many individuals that have helped us “share the holiday spirit” with others. At WIM we have always been very fortunate to have a wonderful base of volunteers. This year, because of COVID19 we have had to make some major adjustments to our holiday baskets and wanted to give you all the heads up, as we know you’ll be expecting to hear from us.
There will be no actual event at Westview this year as COVID19 regulations do not permit events or gatherings. All of our regular WIM families will be coming to the warehouse the first 2 weeks of December to “shop” for their Christmas basket. As well, our “Toy Giveaway Event” will not be happening. Instead, when our families come for their food, our mezzanine will be set up as the “North Pole”, and families will be able choose some toys for their kids.
For all the non WIM families that normally just get the Christmas basket, we will be setting up a drive thru system in the parking lot at the warehouse. Rather than volunteers having their cars loaded with holiday goodies, families themselves will be coming by appointment and driving through. Their Christmas basket will be loaded into their trunk without them even stepping out of their vehicle – allowing everyone to remain safe and keeping the physical distancing rules.
The boxes for these pickups will be prepared at the warehouse during the week by our regular weekly volunteers so as to keep things as tight as possible and maintain everyone’s safety.
So there you have it. Different times for sure. We understand that many of you will be disappointed over not being involved in a Christmas event, however we hope that you can appreciate the necessary changes that we needed to make this year. We are so thankful for all of you and hope that you will find alternative ways to touch the lives of others not as fortunate as you this holiday season.
If you want to help out by “sponsoring a turkey”, “collecting non-perishable food items” or “new toys”, we encourage you to do so. Our days/times for drop off are Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays between 9:30-3:30. Check out our website ( www.wimmoi.org ) for our “most needed food items” , “most needed toys” or to sponsor a turkey.”
We wish all the best for you and your families. Stay safe and healthy. Wendy Gariepy, Operations Manager – West Island Mission
