With an eye for the future and a determination for continued achievement, the Warriors have acted decisively, extending the contract of their treasured coach, Andrew Webster, through the end of the 2028 season. This move comes after Webster’s commendable effort of leading the team tantalizingly close to the grand final.
While Webster was already under contract, the updated agreement cements his seat for the long haul, providing him with a golden opportunity to nurture an exceptional winning legacy across the pond.
The experienced 41-year-old made his journey to New Zealand this year, after offering commendable service as an assistant in the club. That experience was further honed in Penrith, shaping him into an influential figure instrumental in the Panthers’ NRL domination.
Securing his future with the Warriors till 2028, Webster now sets his sight on eclipsing Ivan Cleary’s benchmark of 154 games as coach.
Webster expresses his heartfelt sentiments, “Having always been loathed to leave, I am profoundly appreciative for the opportunity to safeguard my future here. My initial tenure as an assistant here provided a joyful experience, and it feels even more satisfying now”.
Webster continued by saying, “I foresee a brilliant path ahead, extending from our grassroots to the NRL roster, and significantly to the front office with the committed duo of Mark (Robinson) and Warriors chief executive Cameron (George). I am convinced that the trajectory we’re on promises sustained success.”
Under Webster’s insightful watch, the Warriors emerged as the feel-good story of the 2023 season. Inclusive planning and thoughtful recruitment by the club and Webster saw them make a stunning run to the preliminary final. The team’s amped-up defensive grit led to a renewed passion for football in New Zealand.
Notables like Halfback Shaun Johnson, Addin Fonua-Blake, Tohu Harris and Dallin Watene-Zelezniak flourished under Webster’s leadership. Their successful stint underlines Webster’s potential to secure his standing among the best coaches in the game.
Confirming their solidarity with Webster, George remarked, “Andrew’s demonstrated to us that he’s exactly what we need moving forward. His coaching prowess will be instrumental in firming our long-term progression plans.”
“When it comes to vision, passion and commitment for success at all levels within our club, Andrew and I are reflections of each other. Furthermore, extending his contract provides future stars with reassurance courtesy of long-term stability in the head coaching role, not forgetting a mentor passionate about developing players of all age groups into future NRL stars for the Warriors.”
