In a court hearing, it was revealed that an American tourist, known for her vibrant personality and colourful attire, intends to contest allegations of trying to smuggle a 24-karat gold gun into Australia in her suitcase.
Identified as Liliana Goodson, she was apprehended at Sydney airport in April when Australian Border Force officers discovered a gold handgun concealed in her hand luggage.
Authorities were alerted to the anomaly when an X-ray machine detected the gold-plated Colt 45-style pistol. A highlight of the weapon was its pearl inlay, adding to its estimated value of over $2000. The weapon was tucked away inside Ms Goodson’s hand luggage upon her arrival from Los Angeles. However, the weapon was discovered to be unloaded at the time it was confiscated by the law enforcement officers.
Contrary to regulations, Ms Goodson lacked the necessary permit required for importing or carrying the gun in Australia.
On Wednesday, at Sydney’s Downing Centre Local Court, Ms Goodson represented herself and pleaded not guilty to two charges of knowingly importing prohibited goods. The court noted Ms Goodson’s colourful attire and the unusual sight of her cradling a stuffed toy from the Disney movie Lilo & Stitch.
It was revealed that the prosecution intends to call upon eight witnesses for the trial. Ms Goodson is due to return to court the following week to arrange a date for the hearing where she will mount her defence against the charges.
Ms Goodson was initially placed in remand custody for over two weeks, after which she was granted bail in May on the condition that she deposited a $10,000 surety. Another part of her bail terms required her to surrender the passport with which she entered the country.
The potential consequences of a conviction for Ms Goodson are severe. She could possibly be met with a maximum sentence of 10 years imprisonment. Additionally, if she is found guilty, she might face visa cancellation or even deportation.
