Claims issued by Russia alleging that a tumultuous, anti-Israeli demonstration at Makhachkala airport in Dagestan over the past weekend was orchestrated by Ukraine and the West, have been firmly rejected by the United States, categorizing such assertions as patently “absurd”.
Russian President Vladimir Putin publicly claimed that the riot was a sinister plot to cultivate discord within Russia, making this inflating declaration during a televised meeting of Russia’s Security Council on Monday.
The disorder began as hundreds breached the Makhachkala airport in anticipation of an incoming flight from Tel Aviv, Israel. The throng wielded Palestinian flags and voiced anti-semitic slogans – a troubling spectacle in a region that is predominantly Muslim, and rife with tension catalyzed by the conflict within Gaza.
Eventually, security personnel managed to contain the situation. The aftermath of the incident resulted in over 60 individuals being apprehended by local law enforcement.
Russian leader Putin conveyed to the Security Council, “The events in Makhachkala last night were instigated through social networks, not least from Ukraine, by the hands of agents of Western special services. It is the current ruling elites of the US and their satellites who are the main beneficiaries of world instability.”
Dmitry Peskov, spokesperson for the Kremlin, suggested that the tormenting images broadcast from the Gaza Strip could easily be exploited to inflame passions and induce chaos.
Serious concerns also arose from the governor of Dagestan, Sergei Melikov, pointing to a Telegram channel titled Morning Dagestan as a source of inflamed incitement, originating from Ukraine. Despite any disavowals, this channel notorious for its Islamist leanings has been linked to Ilya Ponomarev, a former Russian MP who defected to Ukraine in 2016 and was later granted Ukrainian citizenship.
Rebuffing the Russian allegations during a White House briefing, American spokesperson John Kirby dismissed these accusations as “classic Russian rhetoric”.
“Whenever something goes awry in your country, the knee-jerk reaction is to point the finger elsewhere,” he stated. “The West had nothing to do with this. This hate-fueled belligerence is nothing but expressions of bigotry and intimidation, in its most raw form.”
As international anxiety over the situation peaks, Israel anticipates action from the Russian legal authorities to ensure the protection and well-being of all Jewish and Israeli citizens and to bring those responsible for the rioting to account.
Upholding the painful history of the pogroms that tarnished the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Kirby appreciated the aptness of the comparison with the airport riot and expressed his determination against such recurrence.
Just as every dispute underlines the urgency for a voice of reason, such incidents underscore the need for unity against attempts to instigate discord and sectarian divide. Together, this unity advocate for peace, a principle we should all aim to uphold irrespective of borders.
