Unseen Perils Lurk in Canterbury’s Waters – What Authorities Aren’t Telling You About Popular Swimming Sites

Residents and visitors are advised to steer clear of popular swimming areas along the Waimakariri River in Canterbury due to elevated levels of faecal bacteria. Health New Zealand has issued a warning highlighting unsafe water quality conditions upstream of the Old Highway Bridge North Bank. Dr. Cheryl Brunton, a medical officer with the National Public Health Service, attributed the surge in faecal bacteria levels to recent rainfall in the region. Contaminated water, she explained, may harbor disease-causing microorganisms, including viruses, bacteria, and protozoa. While most health effects from exposure to contaminated water are typically mild and short-lived, Dr. Brunton cautioned there is potential for more severe diseases such as Hepatitis A or Salmonella infection. Furthermore, she noted that various other popular swimming sites across Canterbury might have also been affected by the recent rainfall. Consequently, people are urged to avoid all rivers and beaches for at least two days following heavy rain. Water quality at these sites is deemed unsuitable for recreational activities like swimming, due to health risks posed by bacteria and other pathogens. Additionally, consuming shellfish from these areas should be avoided. To determine safe swimming locations, individuals are encouraged to refer to the Land Air Water Aotearoa website.
