A 32-year-old man has been charged with murder following the death of a police officer, Senior Sergeant Lyn Fleming, in Nelson. The incident occurred in the early hours of January 1, when Fleming and her colleague, Senior Sergeant Adam Ramsey, were struck by a vehicle in Buxton Square. Fleming succumbed to her injuries, while Ramsey remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Two members of the public were also injured; one woman suffered a broken arm and a man who attempted to assist the officers was injured in the shoulder. Another officer was treated for a concussion and discharged from the hospital.

The driver accused of causing the incident was apprehended at the scene after being tasered by police. Police Commissioner Richard Chambers confirmed the man faces eight charges, including murder, attempted murder, and several assault charges. He is also charged with using a vehicle as a weapon, wounding with intent, dangerous driving, and driving while disqualified. Further charges may be pending as investigations continue.

This tragic event marks the first time a policewoman has been killed in the line of duty in New Zealand, and the first police officer in Nelson. Police Commissioner Chambers described the situation as “tragic and senseless,” expressing the difficulty in comprehending the event’s occurrence. He thanked the investigation team for their tireless work and acknowledged the support from Nelson Hospital and the public during this challenging time. The accused is set to appear in Nelson District Court tomorrow.
