A social media video capturing a racist chant by cricket fans during the Boxing Day Test between Australia and India at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) has sparked headlines in India. The video, recorded on the final day of the Test, shows fans chanting “where’s your visa?” directed at Indian supporters. Despite the video’s circulation, no formal complaints were made to Victoria Police, Cricket Australia, or the MCG.
Members of Melbourne’s Indian community expressed that the chant was inappropriate but emphasized their desire not to let it overshadow the positive experiences of the Test series, which drew record-breaking crowds. Victoria Police responded to the incident, noting that there were taunts exchanged between two groups of supporters and no charges were filed as no criminal offenses were identified. The Melbourne Cricket Club and Cricket Australia shared similar sentiments, highlighting the otherwise excellent crowd behavior at the event.
Cricket Australia’s multicultural ambassador, Molina Asthana, who attended the event, noted she had a positive experience and stressed that while such chants can be harmful, they should not overshadow the enjoyment and participation in sports. Community leaders and fans urged focus on respect and education to foster a welcoming environment, reminding that sportsmanship should not be marred by offensive language.
