Twin Truck Tragedies Claim Two Lives in Western Quebec

In twin tragedies that struck western Quebec on a grim Monday morning, two men met unexpected ends in separate accidents involving 10-wheeler trucks.

The dreadful sequence commenced in La Pêche, Quebec where a 70-year-old man, a resident of the area but whose identity has not yet been disclosed, suffered fatal injuries. His heavily-loaded dump truck skidded off the road and in the ensuing crash, flipped and effectively trapped him underneath. The accident was timed at around 7:05 a.m. at the intersection of chemin de la Buerrerie and McCrank. Despite being transported to the hospital post the shocking incident, the man’s injuries were too severe, and he succumbed to them.

The second unfortunate incident unfolded a short ten minutes later in Chelsea, Quebec on chemin de la Rivière. A 63-year-old man, a native of Bouchette, Quebec and again, yet to be publicly identified, was brutally pinned between a dump truck and a backhoe. The authorities say he was likely in the process of refueling the backhoe when a dump truck, reversing at the time, caused the fatal accident. Despite immediate help at the scene, he was declared dead on-site.

Chelsea’s municipality confirmed the incident occurred during roadwork, which has now prompted an indefinite closure of a section of Chemin de la Rivière and Voie Verte Chelsea. The closure restricts access to residents only and motorists are henceforth required to divert their paths via Chemin Saint-Clément to the north or Chemin Pine to the south.

Chelsea’s Mayor, Pierre Guénard, was vocal about his distress over the incident. He expressed his deep grief and extended heartfelt sympathies to the victim’s family, loved ones, and also to the roadwork team from the company involved. Reiterating his support, he confirmed the Municipality’s contact with the investigation team and pledged its full cooperation.

The cases are now under the scrutiny of Quebec’s workplace safety watchdog, the CNESST, as they carry out their investigative procedures. Meanwhile, the community grapples with the unfortunate loss and tries to offer support to the affected.
