In an unprecedented move, Leilani Armenta, a Mexican-American woman, made history as the first female kicker at Jackson State University, a Historically Black College and University institution of NCAA Division I. This memorable event transpired during the September 23 match against the old rivals, Bethune-Cookman University.

Faced with nerves and mounting pressure of creating a benchmark, Armenta revealed how she merely concentrated on playing well during her historic debut. She only sensed the magnitude of her achievement after the game, realizing the positive impact of the history she had made.

An extra layer of complexity added when considering the fact that Armenta, being a freshman communications major, was navigating her post-ACL surgery recovery journey while training most rigorously in a brace, truly demonstrating her resilience and commitment.

Despite physical pain, her integral contribution to the Jackson State’s 22-16 triumph over Bethune-Cookman University, specifically a potent 25-yard kick-off, played a crucial role in the victory. Teammates and fans warmly await her repeat performance at the upcoming October 14 homecoming faceoff against Alabama State University.

Armenta’s robust football passion from high school coupled with an excellent program for her major propelled her to join Jackson State University. She proved her distinctive knack at St. Bonaventure High School, earning her praises as the “best freshman kicker” from her high school football coach, Joseph Goyeneche.

Goyeneche also revealed that despite tearing her ACL during a high school soccer game in her senior year, doctors advised that football could still be an option. The news marked a significant turning point for Armenta, who heartily embraced the opportunity, reflecting, “I had some of the best days playing high school football on and off the field.”

T.C Taylor, head football coach at Jackson State University, praised the freshman as a crucial team member and acknowledged her acceptance amongst teammates. Armenta’s extraordinary performance even led to an overwhelmed Taylor jokingly referring to accepting whatever was dealt by God himself.

Moving forward, Armenta doesn’t fear criticism and views her ACL injury as a blessing in disguise pushing her towards football. While Armenta remains committed to enhancing her performance, Coach Taylor looks forward to her continued contribution to the team’s victories.

She has set her eyes on carrying her passion for kicking through college and beyond, even expressing open enthusiasm if offered a chance to embark on a professional sports career. “If anyone wants to pick me up, I’m more than happy to do it. That would be awesome.” she expressed optimistically. And so, this trailblazer’s journey continues to unfold, carving a path of inspiration for many women athletes to come.
