Tragic New Year’s Incident: The Unanswered Questions Behind a Nelson Officer’s Mysterious Death

14

A police officer in Nelson has tragically died following a violent incident on New Year’s Day. Senior Sergeant Lyn Fleming, a dedicated member of the police force for 38 years, succumbed to injuries after being struck by a vehicle in what has been described as an “unprovoked and senseless act” in Buxton Square. Fleming was known within the community not only for her law enforcement service but also for her significant role in the local school netball program.

Police Commissioner Richard Chambers confirmed Fleming’s death and recounted the incident where officers patrolling the square on foot were hit by a speeding vehicle around 2am. The driver of the vehicle subsequently crashed into a police car. Fleming’s colleague, Adam Ramsey, remains hospitalized but is expected to recover after surgery. A third officer suffered a concussion.

The suspect, a 32-year-old individual, was apprehended at the scene following their tasering by police officers. Reports indicate that two additional civilians were injured during the incident—one woman sustained a broken arm, and a man who intervened to assist police was injured in the shoulder.

Tributes have poured in for Fleming, with Prime Minister Christopher Luxon expressing his devastation at the loss of an officer fulfilling her duty. Nelson Mayor Nick Smith, along with Police Minister Mark Mitchell and local MP Rachel Boyack, also paid their respects, highlighting the tragic nature of the incident and the risks faced by police officers.

Chambers spoke on behalf of the police community, emphasizing the pride and unity within the force during such difficult times. An investigation into the motive behind the attack is underway, although initial assessments label it as senseless.

Mitchell denounced the act as a cowardly attack and reflected on the immense contributions of Fleming and Ramsey to their community and profession. He highlighted the vulnerability of frontline officers and underscored the nation’s support for its police force.

Fleming’s impact on the Nelson community, particularly in sports, was profound, with Nelson College for Girls recognizing her as a foundational figure in their netball program. The loss has reverberated through those who knew her personally and professionally, marking a sorrowful day for both the police and the nation.
