The uncertainty surrounding the future of Geelong’s champion goal kicker, Tom Hawkins, has been decisively put to rest. Hawkins has quashed concerns about his potential retirement or move to another club by firming up his commitment to the Cats with a new one-year contract.

Speculations were set ablaze in the past week when it was divulged that Hawkins had not yet renewed his contract with Geelong. However, to the sheer joy of the Cats’ faithful, Hawkins signed a fresh contract this Friday.

Retaining his position as a venerated forward, Hawkins is all set to return for his 18th spell with the Cats in 2024. This tenure will take him past the mark of 350 matches, and with an additional 54 goals, he would outdo Doug Wade to become the second most prolific goal kicker in the club’s history, following in the footsteps of Gary Ablett Snr.

Hawkins had previously been tenuously tied to Melbourne during his phase of contractual uncertainty. Having now secured his future with the Cats, he emphasized the importance of aligning personal ambitions and family plans before concretizing a deal.

“There’s a great deal of humility I feel stepping into my 18th season with the Cats, the team I’ve ardently supported since childhood,” Hawkins revealed. “The decisions we make in professional sports extend far beyond us, impacting several people connected to us.”

Hawkins continued, “That’s precisely why, after each season, following each contract, I allocate time to reflect with my loved ones regarding our collective future. I’ve always been motivated to continue my journey with the Cats. Geelong means more than just a professional setting; it’s home – a community that has given me so much that I look forward to returning the favor in 2024.”

Andrew Mackie, Geelong’s football chief, couldn’t contain his delight at the news of his triple-premiership teammate’s decision to extend his tenure at Kardinia Park.

Mackie commented, “Tom’s stature and valuable contribution to the Geelong Football Club is monumental, making his decision to continue playing for us in 2024 a reason for jubilation. His leadership, proficiency, professional demeanor, and formidable on-field contribution, where he continues to excel at his craft, will be instrumental in propelling our club forward.”

Mackie further expressed, “Tom plays a crucial role in our football program, making a positive impact on our playing group, particularly our young forwards and key players. We are excited about what the future holds and eagerly anticipate witnessing Tom sport the hoops for his 18th season.”
