Luke Durbridge emerged victorious at the Australian national men’s road race, securing the title for the first time in 11 years, following an unexpected gesture of sportsmanship from teammate and three-time defending champion Luke Plapp. Durbridge dominated the race, breaking away early alongside Olympic gold medallist Conor Leahy and proceeding solo with 80 kilometers remaining. As a result, he established a significant lead, but as fatigue set in, Plapp bridged the gap, demonstrating remarkable camaraderie by escorting Durbridge through the final lap to victory instead of pursuing a record fourth title.

Durbridge expressed immense gratitude towards Plapp, acknowledging the crucial support that allowed him to clinch the win, stating that holding onto Plapp’s wheel saved the day for him as he struggled with exhaustion. The race concluded with Liam Walsh finishing third, Chris Harper fifth, and Jay Vine and Jai Hindley taking sixth and ninth places, respectively.

The women’s road race witnessed a stunning performance from 20-year-old Lucinda Stewart, who claimed both the U23 and elite race titles. Competing for Liv AlUla Jayco’s development team, she triumphed in a closely contested sprint finish after a decisive breakaway, securing victory by holding off rivals Ella Simpson, Cassia Boglio, and Katelyn Nicholson.

Stewart, who is set to join her new team in Europe, expressed her elation, citing deep respect for her teammates and acknowledging the pressure she felt. Her decisive breakaway, initiated early with the help of a small group, proved insurmountable as they maintained a significant gap over the main peloton.

Team director Gene Bates noted the surprise at other teams not curtailing the lead earlier, allowing Stewart and her breakaway companions to capitalize on their advantage.
