Celebrated musician Suzanne Prentice has been recognized as a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit (CNZM) for her contributions to music and the community, a recognition she holds in high esteem due to her efforts with underprivileged children. At 66, Prentice’s illustrious career spans five decades and includes performances with iconic figures such as Dolly Parton and Johnny Cash. Despite these remarkable achievements, it is her work with young people that brings her the most pride.
Prentice, who was deeply surprised by the award, has dedicated many years to community service. Reflecting on her roots, she proudly states her Southland heritage at every overseas show. This honor arrives nearly three decades after she was first made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1995.
Known for her generosity, Prentice has served as a World Vision ambassador for 20 years and has conducted the Kids for Kids show series, which tours annually and gives thousands of children in New Zealand the chance to experience performing on stage. These efforts have reportedly raised $13.7 million for underprivileged children globally.
Prentice’s journey was unexpected; despite aspiring to be a vet or policewoman, height restrictions and chance led her to become a musician. Her breakthrough came at 12 when she participated in a TV talent show, capturing attention with her rendition of ‘Funny Face.’ This launched a career, beginning with her first single and album, “Country Girl,” going gold shortly after its release.
Prentice has been a stalwart in the music industry, from learning her craft in challenging English clubs to meeting artists she once covered. Her influence extends beyond her recordings, with a significant impact on budding artists and through her writing.
In 2022, Prentice overcame a cardiac arrest, and she now plans to work closer to home, focusing on concerts, a new book, and possible vocal training workshops. Despite her nerves before performances, she cherishes moments like performing for British royalty, and throughout her career, family support has been crucial. Her work continues to be an inspiring blend of musical excellence and heartfelt community advocacy.
