In the historic town of Charters Towers, the Goldfield Ashes continues to be the highlight of the year, offering a blend of fellowship, sport, and community spirit. What began in 1948 as a small cricket tournament has evolved into the largest amateur cricket event in the Southern Hemisphere, drawing thousands to this rural north Queensland locale and contributing an estimated $4 million to its economy.

This year, the event has attracted more teams than ever, with 266 participants from across Queensland and beyond. Organiser Kerri Forno expressed her excitement about the unprecedented turnout. For many of the players, such as Ross Goodwin, who has attended with the Yabulu Cricket Club for over 40 years, the tournament is as much about camaraderie as it is about cricket. The tradition includes honoring past teammates and is viewed as a rare annual reunion for players hailing from various parts of Australia and even international destinations.

Local businesses thrive during the event. Pub owner Jane Jesberg remarks on the bustling activity, noting that the weekend helps sustain local businesses throughout the year. Staff are flown in to manage the increased demand, and despite the event’s lively nature, attendees maintain a respectful atmosphere, contributing positively to the town’s identity.

The influx of visitors does create challenges, such as extended checkout lines, but Mayor Liz Schmidt highlights the significant economic impact and the positive perception of the town. Accommodations are booked well in advance, as evidenced by Tanya Chilton of Dalrymple Tourist Van Park, who hosts 13 teams and feels the frenetic yet gratifying nature of the event.

The Ashes also appeal to younger generations, like those from the Crazier Graziers team, who appreciate the communal and relaxed environment amid the sporting backdrop. For them, and many others, the event represents more than cricket; it is a cherished social occasion intertwined with a unique Australian lifestyle, promising a return year after year.
