David Moyes has returned to Everton as manager, a position he held for over a decade before leaving for Manchester United more than a decade ago. Moyes rejoins the club on a two-and-a-half-year contract following the dismissal of Sean Dyche. Everton is currently struggling in the Premier League, sitting at 16th place with only three victories from 19 matches, and is just one point above the relegation zone.
Moyes expressed his enthusiasm at rejoining the Merseyside club, where he previously led them to consistently strong Premier League finishes, including a notable fourth place in the 2004-05 season. Under his management, Everton also reached the UEFA Champions League qualifying rounds for the first time in over three decades and were FA Cup runners-up in 2009.
This appointment marks Moyes’s return to Everton after leaving West Ham United at the end of the 2023-24 season. Everton’s executive chairman, Marc Watts, welcomed Moyes, acknowledging the pivotal time in the club’s history as they prepare to move into a new Liverpool stadium later this year.
Moyes’s tenure with Manchester United after leaving Everton in 2013 was short-lived, lasting only ten months before his dismissal. His time with Real Sociedad and Sunderland also failed to achieve significant success. However, his return to Everton is seen as an opportunity to rebuild and stabilize the club in the English top flight.
Everton’s next challenge will be at home against eighth-placed Aston Villa in their upcoming Premier League match. Fans and the new ownership group, Friedkin Group, are hopeful for a turnaround under Moyes’s familiar leadership as they aim to secure Premier League safety and look forward to their future in a new stadium.
