A teen arrested in Las Vegas is facing charges after allegedly threatening to commit a terrorist attack against the city’s supporters of Israel. Detected by local authorities, the 16-year-old was found to be an ISIS enthusiast who had recently embraced Islam.

The troubling content of the youth’s social media revealed a post where he pledged allegiance to ISIS and expressed intentions to launch “lone wolf operations” against what he referred to as the “enemies of Allah” in Las Vegas. The communication, dated November 28, included disturbing sentiments and featured the ISIS emblem.

Law enforcement promptly identified and located the teenager following the online threat. He now faces allegations that include issuing terroristic threats, attempting to carry out a terrorism act, providing support to a terror group, and possessing explosive device components.

In a coordinated effort involving multiple SWAT teams, he was captured during a legally sanctioned raid on his family’s home. The findings at the scene were grim: bomb-making components, detailed plans for building explosives and executing terror attacks, as well as emblematic items such as a handmade ISIS flag, a headband, and various patches.

Further investigations turned up not just weaponry but also ideological materials. Agents confiscated extremist propaganda from both ISIS and Al-Qaeda, along with pointed anti-Semitic communications. Both entities are recognized as terrorist organizations by the U.S.

Dori Koren, deputy chief of Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s Homeland Security and Special Operations Division, assured the public that the threat seemed to be isolated and was efficiently neutralized by law enforcement. Koren stated that there were no indications of a broader threat to the community.

The backdrop to this intense scrutiny by U.S. law enforcement is an atmosphere of heightened alert for acts of terrorism stemming from recent conflicts in the Middle East. This particular case was addressed by a coalition that included the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force, the Southern Nevada Counter-Terrrorism Center, and LVMPD, with the Clark County District Attorney’s Office taking over prosecution.

The status of the teenage suspect regarding custody remains unclear at this juncture.
