The curtain has prematurely fallen on the A-League women’s season for Sydney FC captain Natalie Tobin after she incurred a torn anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee during a match. Having only navigated one game in this season, the 27-year-old was escorted off the field following the unfortunate incident during the season-opening 2-0 victory against Western Sydney Wanderers at Allianz Stadium last weekend.
Subsequent scans have validated the ACL diagnosis, implying a minimum of nine months away from the field for Tobin. Clearly crestfallen at the unfortunate prospect of missing the season just as it was getting underway, she, however, expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support received from team members, the club, coaching staff, as well as fans, family and friends.
The Sydney’s star player, declared player-of-the-season during the triumphant 2022-23 title-winning campaign, remained optimistic despite the setback. She pledged unwavering support for her team throughout the season and acknowledged the long recovery journey awaiting her, to which she is eager to embark on.
Ante Juric, the Sky Blues coach, acknowledged the magnitude of Tobin’s absence, dubbing it a “big blow”. He acclaimed Tobin for her dynamic leadership and expressed conviction that the team will adapt on the field in her absence.
Juric was also quick to express his belief in Tobin’s resilience and her ability to surmount large obstacles. With an air of anticipation for her remarkable comeback, Juric reaffirmed that the club will offer the injured captain as much support as she needs during her recovery journey.
