Stranded at Christmas: Will the MV MACCOA Finally Break Free from Its Mysterious St. Lawrence Prison?

19

The Canadian Coast Guard has announced a refloating operation scheduled for Friday morning, aiming to free a corn-laden vessel stranded in the St. Lawrence River since Christmas Eve. The ship encountered a power failure and grounded itself just north of Montreal. A refloating plan, confirmed by involved parties including Transport Canada, will be implemented by a team utilizing drones, a helicopter, and three Ocean Group tugboats.

The bulk cargo vessel, MV MACCOA, registered under the Cypriot flag, suffered a broad power outage after departing Montreal, destined for Waterford, Ireland. Fortunately, there have been no reports of injuries, hull damage, or environmental pollution. The vessel received necessary supplies and managed to restore its onboard power.

Efforts to address the situation, complicated by personnel shortages due to the holiday season, involve vessel representatives and experts assessing the vessel and crafting the refloating strategy. The presence of the ship has not disrupted marine traffic, with the enforcement of a slow-speed advisory in the vicinity. The refloating attempt is slated for 11 a.m. Friday, seeking to finally release the vessel and resume its journey.
