In the rural municipality of Springfield, an unfortunate incident at a rail crossing inflicted damage on the tracks, leading to a train derailment on a quiet Tuesday afternoon. Local law enforcement was alerted to the incident near Highway 101’s railway crossing, prompt to arrive on the scene at approximately 1:55 p.m.
It was alleged by police that a semi-truck and trailer failed to halt at the rail crossing as a train was ominously approaching. The semi-truck, in a sad turn of events, proceeded over the rail tracks and ended in the unlikeliest of places, the roadside ditch. This incident resulted in consequent damages to the rail tracks.
The train that was initially approaching the rail crossing could not brake in time. As it traversed over the damaged tracks, it derailed and chaos ensued. The semi-truck’s 69-year-old driver surprisingly walked away with minor injuries. Subsequently, he was charged under the Highway Traffic Act for driving carelessly and was handed a serious offence notice.
In the aftermath of the wreckage, numerous hours were devoted to meticulously clearing the derailment. Consequently, law enforcement temporarily closed off the southbound lanes of Highway 101. But yet, amid the chaos, peace ensued as the locals rallied around in support and efforts to alleviate the aftermath of the unfortunate accident intensified.
