In a significant move, Atlantic City’s Showboat has revised the hours of operation for its Island Waterpark, four months after the grand opening of the $100 million project. As part of a campaign to make the city more family-friendly, Showboat owner Bart Blatstein, a Philadelphia-based real estate maestro, had purchased the former casino site from Stockton University in early 2016 for a mere sum of $23 million.
Originally planned by Stockton to be converted into student accommodation after acquiring the casino from Caesars in 2014 for $18 million, the property was met with considerable skepticism from surrounding businesses and casinos, wary of having college students living within the resort area.
Unfazed, Blatstein chose to reopen Showboat as an exclusive non-gaming resort in July 2016, much to the relief of those seeking a quieter atmosphere free from the cacophony of ringing slot machines and smoke-filled gaming lounges.
The Showboat’s focus on family-friendly entertainment is unique in contrast to the nine casinos of Atlantic City and has involved converting the former casino into a massive arcade and indoor go-kart racetrack. Christened the ‘Lucky Snake Arcade’, this game center, once home to the Caesars Mardi Gras-themed Casino, features over 300 games, including the world’s largest crane game, nostalgic pinball machines, and sought-after virtual reality games, along with a thrilling go-kart track, ensuring fun for patrons of all ages.
However, the Island Waterpark, built on previously outdoor beach volleyball courts, has received mixed reviews. Aggrieved guest complaints reference the high ticket prices, which can reach approximately $300 for a family of four. In response, Showboat has decided to close the waterpark on Tuesdays through Thursdays each week, adjusting the operating hours to Monday and Friday from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
The drop in travelers visiting Atlantic City during colder months may have been a contributing factor to this decision, as well as a response to customer feedback from the summer. Subsequently, the park’s adult ticket price was reduced from $89 to $49. This ticket provides unlimited access to several attractions, including 11 waterslides, lazy river, Blue Cascade Waterfall, Adventure Island, Kids Cove, and Wave Machine, as well as the Boardwalk and its dining and entertainment venues.
