Shocking Toronto Standoff: What Really Happened with the Staple Gun Suspect?

19

Ontario’s police oversight body is conducting an investigation after Toronto police officers engaged in an arrest that resulted in a man sustaining serious injuries. The incident occurred in the city’s west end when officers responded to reports of a stabbing and threats involving a staple gun. Upon arrival, officers encountered a 56-year-old suspect reportedly wielding the staple gun.

In response, one officer fired a sock round from a less-lethal weapon, impacting the suspect, while other officers used “conducted energy” weapons. The situation escalated when the suspect barricaded himself in his apartment, prompting an officer to discharge a firearm, although the suspect was not hit. This impasse led police to ultimately enter the apartment and again employ less-lethal and energy weapons following unsuccessful negotiations.

No officers were harmed during these events, and the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is urging anyone with pertinent information to come forward to assist their inquiry.
