In Picacho, Arizona, an intriguing incident unfolded on July 30 when a desert-dwelling sulcata tortoise named Stitch found himself attempting to cross the bustling lanes of Interstate 10. Nestled between Casa Grande and Tucson, the highway saw an unusual and unexpected traveler that day.
A vigilant motorist, witnessing Stitch’s precarious journey, promptly contacted authorities. Responding to the call was Department of Public Safety Sgt. Steven Sekrecki, who collaborated with the concerned motorist to shepherd the wayward tortoise to safety, ensuring he remained unharmed despite the dangerous situation.
Upon closer inspection, the troopers discovered the name “Stitch” inscribed on the tortoise’s shell. This clue led them to initiate contact with a nearby ostrich ranch, located just three miles from the highway. The ranch, well-known in the region, confirmed that Stitch was indeed one of their resident tortoises who had recently managed to escape his designated habitat.
Thanks to the quick actions of the motorist and the dedicated efforts of Sgt. Sekrecki, Stitch’s adventurous sojourn came to a safe end. The Arizona Republic reported that Stitch was safely returned to the ranch, bringing his highway escapade to a close.
