Hokitika is likely to enjoy the best weather in New Zealand on New Year’s Eve, despite a frontal system causing turbulent conditions across much of the country. According to MetService meteorologist Alec Holden, a low-pressure system on the East Coast of the North Island is bringing heavy rain, hail, and thunderstorms, with warnings in place until late Monday night. The unsettled weather is expected to persist into Tuesday, impacting both the North and South Islands.
While the Northern regions anticipate temporary relief with sunshine breaking through later in the day, strong winds are forecast for areas such as Auckland and Norsewood. Residents are advised to secure any items that could be blown away. In contrast, the West Coast, especially Hokitika, is predicted to experience clear skies and mild conditions, making it an ideal spot for celebrating with fireworks. Queenstown is also expected to boast clear and calm weather for the festivities.
However, the Rhythm and Vines festival near Gisborne might face wet and stormy weather, as attendees have been urged to avoid beaches and waterways due to recent severe rain compromising the city’s wastewater system. Heavy rain and storm warnings remain in effect, though conditions are expected to slightly improve towards midnight.
A SwimSafe alert remains for Waikanae Beach, with the Gisborne District Council advising against swimming or fishing in affected areas due to sewage contamination. Depending on the outcome of the forecasted thunderstorms, the severe rain watch in Wairoa might escalate to a more serious warning.
Holden noted that such variable weather patterns are not unusual during summer, which can bring either serene high-pressure systems or intense weather events fueled by seasonal heat.
