Dedicated service and a steadfast commitment to community marked the career of Const. Orrett Robinson of the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service. This stalwart officer, aged 36, lost his life in a motor vehicle collision on Sept. 5, prompting the flag at Sault Police Headquarters to be mournfully flown at half-mast.
Recalling his diligent service, Police Chief Hugh Stevenson accentuated the void Robinson’s demise has left behind. He reminisced how his trademark smile, respectful demeanor, and strong handshake characterized his personality, creating a robust presence within the department corridors. Stevenson mournfully stated, “It’s a huge loss to us.”
The late officer’s regular engagement at city’s community events was underscored by Stevenson. He highlighted how Robinson would often pause during patrols for friendly interactions with city residents. He would particularly engage children in merry repartee that never failed to trigger laughter, strengthening police-community rapport.
Robinson, an Algoma University graduate, was also a part of the Thunderbird soccer team. Algoma president Asima Vezina paid a heartfelt tribute to this cheerful and warm-hearted university alumnus, mourning the universal sadness at his loss.
The grief echoed within city hall, with flags lowered to half-staff. Mayor Matthew Shoemaker extended condolences to the Robinson family on behalf of the council and voiced how the tragic event had left an empty void in the city’s heart.
In the aftermath of this tragic incident, Sault police are urging local residents to pay tribute to Robinson by sharing their personal stories of him. These tributes will be passed on to his bereaved family to underline the impact of his service. As they come to grips with their colleague’s early departure, Stevenson asserts, “We’re all in that mourning stage. It’s not easy, but we know we have to be strong for the family and we’ll get through it together.”
With funeral arrangements yet to be announced, authorities, including the OPP, continue their investigation into the devastating crash that claimed Robinson’s life.
