For the first time in nearly 8,000 episodes, “Wheel of Fortune” aired without the familiar greeting from longtime host Pat Sajak. Stepping into the role after Sajak’s remarkable 41-year tenure, Ryan Seacrest made his debut alongside co-host and letter turner Vanna White. Known for his prolific career hosting “American Idol,” New Year’s Eve specials, and a popular radio show, Seacrest took the stage as the newest face of the beloved game show on Monday night.
“I still can’t believe my luck being here with you tonight to continue this legacy of this incredible show with all of you, and, of course, my good friend Vanna White,” Seacrest said as he welcomed viewers. “Thank you for the very warm welcome.”
In a heartfelt opening monologue, Seacrest paid tribute to Sajak, acknowledging his immense impact and his recent retirement at the close of the 41st season. Sajak enjoyed a memorable send-off, including winning his fourth Emmy Award for best game show host at the Creative Arts Emmys.
“Hosting ‘Wheel of Fortune’ is a dream job. I’ve been a fan of this show since I was a kid watching it in Atlanta with my family, and I know how special it is that ‘Wheel’ has been in your living rooms for the past 40 years,” Seacrest expressed. “I’m just so grateful to be invited in. I also know I’ve got some very big shoes to fill, so let’s play ‘Wheel of Fortune.’”
Seacrest’s inaugural episode was marked by his infectious energy and signature good-natured humor. Differing from his predecessor, Seacrest eschewed cue cards, opting for a more spontaneous approach during his conversations with contestants Corina, Terry, and Cindy about their lives and backgrounds.
Besides the prominent change in hosts, the premiere of the 42nd season featured some aesthetic updates. While the colorful wheel and iconic puzzle board largely remained the same, with White enjoying an upgrade to a motion sensor board in 2022 for the show’s 40th anniversary, the stage received a modern makeover. The new design includes sleek golden wheels and spokes, adding a fresh touch to the set.
During their trademark closing banter, Seacrest asked White how she liked the new stage. Commenting on the abundance of lights and action, White’s remarks led Seacrest to humorously note his hopes for smooth sailing through his first week.
In a recent interview with The Associated Press, Seacrest marveled at the set’s impressive scale upon his initial visit. Despite the rapid shooting schedule—filming multiple episodes per day—the arrangement fits well with Seacrest’s busy schedule of other hosting responsibilities.
Many familiar elements of “Wheel of Fortune” remain unchanged. White continues to grace the stage in elegant gowns, while Seacrest maintains the tradition of wearing a suit and tie. The recognizable sound effects and devices contestants use are still in place, ensuring the show’s essence stays intact. Behind the scenes, the camaraderie and respect among the production team endure, fostering a warm, familial atmosphere.
“I’ve also been impressed with how close the family is that works on ’Wheel of Fortune,’ the production team that puts it together. It’s a lot of people,” Seacrest shared at a promotional event for the new season. “They’re really a family and they have a lot of respect for every single person, what they do on the show, and that’s special.”
White added a sentimental note, sharing that a staff member who began working on the show at 18 now has children graduating from college. “We’ve been together a long time,” she concluded.
