Canadian defenceman Matthew Schaefer will miss the remainder of the world junior hockey championship following an injury that occurred during a recent match. Schaefer was hurt in the first period of Canada’s 3-2 shootout loss to Latvia, after crashing into the net, which appeared to injure his left shoulder. The incident happened swiftly during a rush in the game.

Prior to this injury, the 17-year-old promising player had made a significant impact, scoring a goal and an assist during Canada’s 4-0 victory over Finland in their tournament opener. Schaefer, a native of Stoney Creek, Ontario, has shown impressive performance this season, having scored seven goals and made 15 assists over 17 games for the Erie Otters in the Ontario Hockey League. His talent has positioned him as one of the top prospects for the upcoming NHL draft, alongside forwards Porter Martone, James Hagens, and Michael Misa.
