Racist Posters Stir Controversy, Prompting Police Investigation in British Columbia

An incendiary poster aimed at segregating children’s playtime along racial lines in British Columbia’s Lower Mainland area has stoked considerable ire, resulting in law enforcement officials launching an inquiry into the matter. The problematic call-to-action urged parents of European lineage to band together at exclusivist events for their children in the Tri-Cities of Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, and Port Moody.

This disquieting invitation, designed to appeal to mothers seeking play environments for their children exclusively among other European-descendants, was championed via a distributed poster. Over the weekend, the poster’s image, taken at a local bus stop in Port Coquitlam, was made public by the Instagram account Black Vancouver, inciting a national uproar.

Mayor Brad West hit back against this divisive suggestion, maintaining that such reprehensible discrimination has no place in Coquitlam, Port Moody, or any other community. Determined in the goal of dismantling biases and fostering unity, he reaffirmed his commitment to capitalizing on the rich multiculturality inherent in the city.

Despite efforts by local bylaw officials to immediately remove the contentious poster, they failed to locate it. The possibility that it had been already removed by a local resident was put forth by Mayor West.

Harjit Sajjan, a parliament member from Vancouver South, joined the discourse, voicing his resentment of the racially charged poster on social media, criticizing it as deeply troubling. In his words, Canada, a nation that welcomes individuals of all ethnic and cultural backgrounds, should not undeservingly subject children to blatant racism and discrimination.

The agent behind the racially divisive provocation remains unclear. A URL located on the poster leads to a private messaging group on a mobile messaging app, Telegram. Addressing the furor, the Coquitlam RCMP affirmed their commitment to thoroughly examine the dubious posters located throughout Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam to establish any underlying criminal intent. To support their effort, the law enforcement body encouraged anyone with relevant information to come forward.
