Quebec ski hill operators are maintaining a positive outlook despite facing unseasonably warm weather and heavy rainfall, which pose challenges during the typically profitable holiday ski season. At Mont-Saint-Bruno on Montreal’s South Shore, co-owner Stéphanie Grenier likens the conditions to spring skiing, offering visitors the chance to enjoy the slopes without cumbersome winter gear. Thanks to colder weather earlier in December, they’ve managed to maintain a solid snow base with artificial snow.
Environment Canada issued a rainfall warning for southern Quebec, expecting 25 to 35 millimeters of rain and temperatures above freezing. Despite this, the Bromont ski hill in the Eastern Townships reports a successful first week of holiday skiing compared to the previous year, although some runs might shut down earlier due to weather conditions.
Evelyne Déry, a spokesperson for Bromont, and Grenier both anticipate colder weather soon, with temperatures forecasted to drop to around -10°C by Saturday. This return to colder conditions would help stabilize operations and maintain the momentum of the ski season.
