Quebec immunization committee has formally given the province a greenlight to vaccinate younger teens with Pfizer-BioNTech doses. This is good news in the fights against COVID-19.
Comite Sur I’immunisation du Quebec published a notice on Tuesday stating that the province can vaccinate youth aged 12 to 17 after three-phase clinical trials.
“As 12-15-year-olds, as well as many 16-17-year-olds, find themselves in a school environment, it might be appropriate to take advantage of this context to better reach them.”
No safety issues were reported related to the vaccine except that the youth who participated experienced fever at a higher rate than adults. Ten percent of youth experienced fever after the first dose, and 20 percent with fever symptoms. The percentage both decreased to 4 and 16 percent respectively in the second dose.
Quebec officials are expected to unveil the youths’ vaccination plans on Thursday. Christian Dube, the Health Mister hopes that all youths get both doses before the next school year.
