Quebec Unveils Secretive Recycling Revolution: What Are Producers Hiding?

25

A new recycling system has been launched in Quebec, aimed at reducing waste and shifting responsibility to producers. The initiative, managed by Éco Entreprises Québec, tasks producers with overseeing the recycling of their packaging and paper products. This move is designed to alleviate the burden on municipalities and encourage producers to enhance recycling efforts by covering the cost of managing their waste. Residents can now recycle a broader range of items, including bags and plastic wraps that were previously non-recyclable, to develop markets for materials that currently lack recycling solutions. However, certain items such as aerosol cans, Styrofoam, and biodegradable plastics remain excluded from the program. This system, known as extended producer responsibility, intends to increase recycling rates and material recovery, benefiting both the environment and local economies.
