Police Charge Woman With Second-Degree Murder In Case Involving Death Of Indigenous Man

Police have charged a woman with second-degree murder in a case involving an indigenous man of the Esgenoôpetitj First Nation. The man died in August, last year.

Police arrested and charged Nikita Dedam, aged 34, also of Esgenoôpetitj First Nation, with the killing of Christopher Dedam.

The police found him dead at his residence along Micmac road on the 25th of august, 2020. A police investigation concluded that this was a homicide.

Nikita was arraigned and charged at a Miramichi court on Thursday and is expected to remain in custody until the next court session on the 13th of April, police said.

The following day after his body was discovered, a 33-year-old woman went into police custody and was held on an unrelated issue.

The woman was Nikita Dedam, police said. However, they cannot comment on whether these two are related but noted that more information would be available during her trial.
