Summer is in full swing and many of you have asked me for suggestions on reasonably priced patio wines. Though you can find delectable wines from most countries, some of my favourites come from countries where the summers are hot and the wines are particularly refreshing.
Segura Viudas Cava Reserva Brut
Cava is a sparkling wine from Spain, using the same production style as Champagne. Traditionally made from macabeu, parellada and xarello grape varieties, the majority of cava comes from Catalonia. This wine exhibits aromas of citrus and pear and a hint of baked bread. On the palate, it is crisp with a pleasing fine mousse and notes of green apple, peach and lime zest. Available for $15.55 at SAQ locations, it makes for a festive sipper or a reasonably priced addition to your Sunday morning mimosas. It also pairs nicely with oysters, salmon, poultry dishes and cow or goat milk cheeses.
Gazela Vinho Verde
Literally meaning “green or young wine”, Vinho Verde is a Denominação de Origem Controlada (DOC) in Northern Portugal. Light, crisp and aromatic, you will find lemon and floral overtones which are also present on the palate. With a slight effervescence, this medium-dry wine is known for its high acidity and loves to be paired with food. At $10.95, you will want to have a few on hand to try with spicy curries, grilled seafood and summertime salads.
