Parts of Ontario are bracing for substantial snowfall as Environment Canada has issued snow squall warnings across several regions. Predictions indicate that areas like Bracebridge, Owen Sound, Kawartha Lakes, Barrie, Orillia, and Peterborough to Bellville could see up to 60 centimeters of snow due to lake effect snow squalls starting Thursday into Friday morning.
The weather agency warns that northwest winds, gusting up to 60 km/h, could cause blowing snow, significantly reducing visibility. “Visibility will be suddenly reduced to near zero at times in heavy snow and blowing snow. Rapidly accumulating snow will make travel difficult,” stated the agency.
Surrounding regions are also under advisories, with potential snow accumulations of 25 to 40 centimeters. In contrast, southwestern areas, including Kitchener, Waterloo, Guelph, and Stratford to Grand Bend, might receive between 5 to 10 centimeters of snow. Lake effect snow is anticipated to weaken by Thursday afternoon, but not before creating hazardous conditions on highways, roads, walkways, and parking lots. Environment Canada advises taking extra care while walking or driving in the affected areas to ensure safety.
