Fresh off the Olympics, U.S. breakout star and medalist Stephen Nedoroscik, better known online as “Pommel Horse Guy,” is set to compete in the upcoming season of “Dancing With the Stars.” The casting news was announced during Thursday’s episode of ABC’s “Good Morning America,” making Nedoroscik the first celebrity contestant revealed for the season premiering on September 17 on ABC and Disney+. Notably, he will be the first male gymnast to participate in the show, as highlighted by “Good Morning America” co-host Robin Roberts.
“I want to bring some of that gymnastics, maybe a backflip or handstand,” Nedoroscik said during his appearance on the morning show. “I want to have fun with it.”
At 25 years old, Nedoroscik picked up two bronze medals in Paris, significantly contributing to the American men’s team’s first Olympic medal in 16 years and securing a third-place finish in his individual event. He gained viral fame through memes of his pre-performance rituals, which often humorously depicted him as nodding off before dramatically springing to life, much like Superman transforming by removing his glasses.
“The memes are hilarious and I’m loving them all,” remarked Nedoroscik, a Penn State engineering graduate, during an interview in Paris.
The upcoming season of “Dancing With the Stars” will be the show’s 33rd season. It will be co-hosted by Alfonso Ribeiro and Julianne Hough, with judging duties performed by Carrie Ann Inaba, Bruno Tonioli, and Derek Hough. The complete roster of celebrity contestants will be disclosed at a later date, according to an ABC press release.
Addressing the unique concern about his iconic glasses, Nedoroscik, who has an eye condition known as coloboma, mentioned the potential for creativity. “I might have fun with it. I’m scared they’ll fly off, that’s the thing,” he said to the hosts. “Maybe we could do a gadget, keep them on? Maybe a new pair of glasses, match the theme?”
