Nick Kyrgios’ Mysterious Confidence: Can He Overcome Injury and Secrets at the Australian Open?

Nick Kyrgios has expressed confidence in his readiness to compete in the Australian Open, declaring his abdominal injury “manageable” just two days before the tournament commences. The Australian tennis player, who will face British world number 86 Jacob Fearnley in the initial round, completed a light practice session at Melbourne Park on Friday and is set for another in the afternoon.

The 29-year-old, aiming to participate in his first grand slam since the 2022 US Open, showed positive signs during a practice session where he served without discomfort. This marked a significant step, as concerns about his injury had earlier led him to withdraw from an exhibition event featuring Novak Djokovic.

“I think it’s just part of the game, niggles… as long as it’s not something like my wrist again, I think I can manage it,” Kyrgios stated, maintaining that he remains confident in his capabilities. Despite previous setbacks from wrist and knee injuries, he remains optimistic about his performance.

Kyrgios avoided discussing Djokovic’s recent claims about poisoning and rival Jannik Sinner’s doping ban during a press conference, instead choosing to focus on his belief in his unpredictable style of play, which he feels gives him a fighting chance against any opponent.
