As the prestigious Stanley Cup continues its global journey, it has made its way to Kitchener, thanks to local native and Vegas Golden Knights defenceman, Nicolas Hague. Returning to his hometown, Hague has brought the coveted National Hockey League (NHL) trophy home for the community to celebrate.
On a busy Sunday, the area surrounding the Activa Sportsplex buzzed with excitement. Hundreds of residents thronged the streets; their vehicles dotting the surroundings in anticipation of catching a sight of their hometown hero and the revered NHL trophy.
Nicolas Hague had humble beginnings in the world of hockey, rising through the ranks from playing minor league hockey in Kitchener. Before being drafted by the Vegas Golden Knights as a second-round pick in the 2017 NHL draft, he had a productive stint with the Kitchener Dutchmen (GOJHL) and subsequently, the Mississauga Steelheads of the Ontario Hockey League.
Earlier this year, Hague’s team, the Golden Knights, celebrated their victory over the Florida Panthers in the fiercely contested best-of-seven Stanley Cup championship series. Hague’s contribution was significant, scoring a crucial goal in the final game.
Wesley, a self-proclaimed “big Vegas fan,” shared his excitement at witnessing the Stanley Cup for the second time in his life. Another local resident, Kris Manninga chimed in, mentioning his love for hockey, particularly the Pittsburgh and Toronto teams. Manninga went on to note that, while the Stanley Cup often returns to Toronto, its presence in Kitchener is quite a rare spectacle. In his words, “For Kitchener, it’s nice having a local boy win the Stanley Cup and bring it back home.”
Prior to its stop in Kitchener, the Stanley Cup made a visit to Guelph, appearing at the Italian Canadian Club. Guelph Mayor, Cam Guthrie shared multiple photos of the event, highlighting the enthusiastic crowds gathered to view the Cup. The Mayor also noted that the event organizers were supporting the local Guelph Food Bank, lending a philanthropic touch to the fanfare.
