In a turn of recent events, renowned Kansas City Chiefs’ wide receiver, Rashee Rice stands as a suspect in an assault case in Dallas, according to a newspaper report on a Tuesday. The apparent incident came to light scarcely over a month following his involvement in a high-speed, chain-reaction accident causing multiple charges against him.
Rice, the Chiefs’ rising star, allegedly became embroiled in an altercation at an upscale downtown nightclub in the early hours of a recent Monday. Following the tumultuous incident, the victim checked into a local hospital for treatment of non-lethal injuries.
Dallas police did not explicitly link Rice to the incident during their report but responded to a distress call claiming an assault at approximately 2.30 a.m. on that Monday. At the scene, they found the victim who was later taken to the hospital, citing non-life-threatening injuries.
Meanwhile, representatives for Rice had yet to respond to requests for comment on the case , including an enquiry made by the Associated Press. Moreover, both the Chiefs and the NFL have maintained a strict silence on the matter.
The incident finds Rice in the news once again since his voluntary return to the Chiefs for workouts last month. In the days leading up to the return, Chiefs’ coach Andy Reid expressed that he had been in touch with the receiver and the team was actively awaiting the outcome of the ongoing legal processes.
However, this won’t be Rice’s first brush with the law. The former SMU and Dallas-area high school player, had in fact turned himself into Dallas police after facing chargesfollowing his involvement in a six vehicle high-speed crash. Among the charges, he faces are aggravated assault.
Ironically, Rice’s attorney, Texas state Sen. Royce West, had in past instances acknowledged that Rice, driving a Lamborghini SUV, was speeding during the dreadful crash happened on March 30. Another SMU ex-player, Theodore Knox, was identified as the driver of a Corvette involved in the same accident.
Rice, who celebrated his 24th birthday last month, together with Knox, now bear the burden of multiple charges. This includes one count each of aggravated assault and collision involving severe bodily harm and six counts of collisions leading to injury.
The high-speed crash not only resulted in four casualties but also saw both Rice and Knox fleeing the scene in their respective Lamborghini and Corvette without ensuring others involved in the accident were safe or required medical assistance.
Reflecting on a brighter side of his career, Rice, after being picked in the second round by Kansas City last year, played a pivotal role in the Chiefs’ 25-22 overtime victory while facing the San Francisco 49ers in the Super Bowl. In that season, Rice created quite a stir, leading his team not only with an impressive 20 games under his belt but also topping the charts with seven touchdown catches in the regular season.
