In a poignant tale of emerging from anguish, a bereaved mother, Rhiannon, has described her newfound joy in her daughter Summer-Gracie as a “blessing from her kids”. Rhiannon lost her children, Gracie-Ann, four, and Jayden-Lee, three, in a tragically fatal car crash caused by a van driven by a substance-abusing driver, Martin Newman.
The arrival of Summer-Gracie, seven months later, has played a pivotal role in healing this devastated family. Rhiannon sweetly confessed that Summer-Gracie often coos at pictures of her late siblings on the wall and her laughter echoes her mother’s belief that her new child is truly a “gift from them”.
Summer-Gracie Lucas, named after her deceased elder sister, made her early arrival on March 30, slightly before her sister’s intended birthday. Her birth provided gleams of happiness into their lives clouded by the surmounting grief.
The dreadful accident occurred on the M4 motorway in February of the previous year. Newman, the driver of the vehicle that killed Gracie-Ann and Jayden-Lee was under the influence of cocaine and alcohol. Both children died on impact while Rhiannon and partner Adam suffered severe injuries.
They were returning home from a fun-filled Disney Frozen-themed party, heading to a science center when Newman’s Ford Transit van brutally hit their car. The family had pulled over to the motorway’s hard shoulder due to Gracie’s sudden bout of sickness.
Astonishingly, Newman admitting to consuming cocaine and considerable amounts of alcohol, succumbed to hangover and fatigue at the time of the crash. Newman was charged with causing death by dangerous driving and was finally sentenced to over nine years in prison.
Adam and Rhiannon carry their timeless memories with late Gracie and Jayden, never allowing their memory to fade. They find solace through their newborn, Summer-Gracie, whom they see as a beacon of light that has not only helped them regain sanity but has also instilled a sense of normality back into their lives.
Rhiannon has since voiced her zero-tolerance stance against drink-driving atrocities. She has taken upon herself to educate her community members about the dire implications of such reckless actions and has appealed to motorists to reconsider before getting behind the wheel under the influence. As their family attempts to heal and move forward, Gracie and Jayden will always hold a special and enduring place in their hearts.
This powerful account not only draws attention to the psychological and emotional consequences of such accidents but, significantly, highlights the severity of the problem of drink and drug driving across the country.
