The Children’s Minister of New Zealand, Karen Chhour, has sharply criticized the actions of eight youths who spent a night on the roof of Korowai Manaaki, a youth correctional facility in South Auckland. Chhour described their actions as disorderly and disruptive rather than a protest, countering some media portrayals. The incident, which concluded when the last individual was brought down, ended with all involved now in police custody facing charges of intentional damage.
Karen Chhour emphasized that the behavior exhibited by the youths is a recurring issue in their communities, noting that while the holiday season can escalate emotions, such conduct will not be condoned. The authorities, including the police and courts, are expected to address the repercussions of their actions.
This episode marked the second such occurrence in 2024, a significant decrease from 15 similar instances in 2023. Chhour attributed this reduction to recently implemented improvements in the management of youth justice facilities, which have enhanced the safety, security, and staff training at these residences.
She expressed her support for the staff at Korowai Manaaki, commending their efforts to resolve the situation without any serious injuries. The facility maintained security throughout the incident, ensuring that no one left the grounds.
