A man has been charged with murder following the death of a respected police officer in Nelson, New Zealand. Senior Sergeant Lyn Fleming was killed when she and her colleague, Senior Sergeant Adam Ramsey, were struck by a vehicle in Buxton Square during the early hours of New Year’s Day. Two members of the public were also injured in the incident, with a woman sustaining a broken arm and a man who attempted to assist the officers injuring his shoulder. A third officer was treated for concussion and later discharged from the hospital.

The suspect, a 32-year-old man, was arrested at the scene and now faces eight charges, including murder, attempted murder, assault using a vehicle as a weapon, dangerous driving, and driving while disqualified. He is due to appear at the Nelson District Court on Friday.

The Nelson Police Station became a focal point for mourners wishing to pay their respects, with people leaving flowers, cards, and balloons at the station where the New Zealand Police flag flew at half-mast. Among those paying tribute were Marshall Garrett, who cycled to deliver flowers, and Erin Gurnell, who traveled from Christchurch. Pastor Jennifer Macleod of Stoke Baptist Church brought a bouquet representing local Baptist congregations.

Police Commissioner Richard Chambers described the incident as “tragic and senseless,” noting the profound impact on the community. Fleming is the first policewoman in New Zealand and the first police officer in Nelson to be killed in the line of duty. The commissioner extended gratitude to Nelson Hospital staff and the public who aided the injured. The community continues to rally in support as they come to terms with the loss of Senior Sergeant Lyn Fleming.
