The City of Dorval adopted a new by-law on potable water use on February 17. It replaces by-law RCM-33-2010 on watering restrictions and is now in effect.
Here are the main points of this new by-law:
Watering between June 1 and September 1
BY SPRINKLERS OR SOAKER HOSES:
- Watering is permitted from 5 a.m. to 7 a.m. and from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. (if it does not rain), as follows:
- Even-numbered civic address: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday
- Odd-numbered civic address: Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday
BY AUTOMATIC SPRINKLER SYSTEMS:
- Must be equipped, among others, with an automatic humidity sensor
- Must be programmed between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m., as follows:
- Even-numbered civic address: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday
- Odd-numbered civic address: Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday
EXCEPTIONS AND RESTRICTIONS:
- Manuel watering of gardens, flowers, trees, and shrubs, using a hose fitted with a self-closing nozzle, is permitted at all times.
- The watering of a newly installed lawn, of a new tree, or of new landscaping is permitted daily during the 15 days following installation, planting, or landscaping, after obtaining a permit, free of charge, from the Urban Planning Department.
Potable water throughout the year
- The filling of a pool is prohibited between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m., except from April 1 to May 15, when it is permitted at all times.
- The washing of paved surfaces (e.g. asphalt), patios, or exterior walls is permitted only once a year, between April 1 and May 15.
- Additionally, it is permitted at any time during construction work, landscaping, or for hygiene reasons.
- It is prohibited to melt snow or ice by using drinking water supplied by the municipal distribution network.
- Any private water feature or pond must be equipped with a functioning system to recirculate the water.
- Car washing is allowed at all times provided you use a bucket or a garden hose equipped with a self-closing nozzle.
- Air-conditioning/refrigeration devices using water without a recirculation system are prohibited. The existing devices must be removed by 2025.

Great job drawing our attention to the development in this place. For one, people in our clime will have a hard time readjusting to these policies. This perfected overrides the conventional use of water known over the years.
