Since launching its service in Regina in early June, Neuron e-scooters have been utilized by riders for an impressive 165,000 kilometres of travel. With their journeys averaging 2.9 kilometres in length and taking roughly 17 minutes to complete, the adoption of these e-scooters by the locals is clear.
Ensuring its place as a significant component of Regina’s transport network, Ankush Karwal, General Manager of Neuron Mobility in Canada, expressed immense satisfaction with the wide acceptance and use of their e-scooters. He further expressed gratitude to both the City of Regina and the trusted riders that contributed to the success of the program as the first season winds down.
Data collected from a company survey reveals that 54 per cent of these trips acted as substitutions for car journeys. Consequently, this resulted in an eco-friendlier transit option, eliminating approximately 14 tonnes of CO2, given the emission-free nature and energy efficiency of e-scooters.
Scooter usage was highest for leisure and recreational purposes, allowing users to explore cafes, restaurants, and more in the city, accounting for 77 per cent of usage. Other prominent use cases included running errands, commuting to work or school, and bridging connections with public transit lines.
Realization of the utility value of the e-scooter program was underlined by Mayor Sandra Master’s endorsement. She commended the acceptance of the service by residents and visitors in its premier season and acknowledged the role of e-scooters in offering new commuting trends in a sustainable manner while bolstering Regina’s economy.
Indeed, each e-scooter is projected to inject approximately $16,800 to Regina’s economy, totaling a substantial $4.2 million annually. The service has been predominantly adopted by the younger demographic, with 30 per cent comprised of both 16-24 and 25-34 year-olds. Older age groups display less popularity for the service, with riders aged 45-54 at 13 per cent and those 55 and over at a mere five per cent.
The inaugural e-scooter season in Regina has now concluded, officially closing on Oct. 25. With the results and impact thus far, it will be intriguing to observe its return with the onset of a new season.
