Always concerned for the health and safety of everyone,The City of Pointe-Claire, is endorsing National Teen Driver Safety Week (NTDSW), which will run from October 16 to 22, 2016.

This year, NTDSW is raising teens’ awareness of attentive driving, by keeping their phones out of reach, asking passengers to help reduce distractions and avoiding multi-tasking while driving, such as changing the music, making a call or playing with their pet.

“We care about the health and safety of our residents, and this campaign is part of our efforts. For the second year in a row, we are launching a road safety awareness campaign in Pointe-Claire. This year, the Slower is Safer campaign is taking the form of friendly signs displayed in front of homes, parks and certain municipal buildings to reach parents, friends, families and seniors. With that vision, it is only natural to endorse this national initiative to reach more young drivers,” says Mayor Trudeau.

NTDSW is an initiative by Parachute, a national non-profit organization dedicated to preventing injuries and saving lives. Through numerous programs and policies, the organization proposes initiatives to provide a safer environment for all.

According to the statistics provided by the organization, teens aged 16 to 19 make up 12% of drivers but account for 20% of victims of road-related injuries and fatalities.

Attentive driving also means not getting behind the wheel when impaired. Fatigue, alcohol, drugs and medications are all factors that influence our ability to drive, which could have painful, and even fatal, consequences.

“Raising the awareness of youth promotes an ever-safer environment. Everyone is encouraged to share and discuss tips for ensuring optimal driving. Safety is everyone’s concern, every day,” concluded Mayor Trudeau.
