Vitalik Buterin, the co-founder of Ethereum, has made a substantial donation of 10 million Thai Baht to support the Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Thailand. The donation, which will be delivered in two equal installments on December 26, 2024, and December 26, 2025, aims to enhance the zoo’s operations and to establish a special exhibition for Moo Deng, a popular pygmy hippopotamus.

In a heartfelt letter addressed to the zoo’s director, Buterin expressed his admiration for the zoo’s commitment to animal welfare and education. He also conveyed his enthusiasm for the planned upgrades, particularly those concerning the habitat of Moo Deng. Buterin wrote, “I was deeply impressed with your commitment to animal welfare, education, and outreach, as well as fostering a fun community spirit for visitors and staff. I was particularly excited to hear your plans for improvements to the zoo itself, especially the proposal for upgrades to the Pygmy Hippopotamus habitat.”

The donation is part of Buterin’s participation in the Wildlife Sponsorship Program, which includes adopting Moo Deng along with her family. This contribution emphasizes the Ethereum ecosystem’s gesture of gratitude and friendship towards the local community and acknowledges the warm welcome they have received.

Moo Deng has become an unexpected star in Thailand, and her dedicated exhibit will be funded by this generous donation. The ensuing popularity surrounding Moo Deng gave rise to the launch of the MOODENG token, which saw a meteoric rise of 1600%, reaching an all-time high of $0.6804. Nonetheless, the token has recently experienced a decline, trading at $0.277—a 4.75% decrease from the previous day. Its market capitalization stands at $274.75 million, with a significant 23.65% increase in trading volume over the past 24 hours, amounting to $98.44 million.

Vitalik Buterin concluded by expressing his excitement for the zoo’s future developments, “I very much look forward to seeing Moo Deng live long and prosper, and how, alongside her, our family and community also thrive.” His donation underscores a commitment to connecting local community initiatives and wildlife conservation with global technological innovation. The funds will further support the zoo’s infrastructure and educational programs, solidifying Moo Deng’s symbolic representation of collaboration and care.
