Police are actively searching for individuals involved in a dramatic incident in Ōpōtiki, where cars were repeatedly rammed, causing pedestrians to flee in panic. The event occurred late at night at the intersection of Kelly Street and Church Street, where a vehicle was reported to have struck a person in addition to hitting several other vehicles before fleeing the scene.
The chaotic scene was captured in a video shared on social media, showing the car crashing into multiple others before speeding away. Police later found the vehicle abandoned at Hikuwai Reserve along State Highway 35, with the occupants having fled on foot. Authorities have yet to apprehend those responsible and are appealing to the public for any information that could aid their investigation.
In addition to the vehicle ramming incident, police noted that a scuffle had taken place outside a nearby bar. Fortunately, no significant injuries were reported from these tumultuous events. Police are urging witnesses who have not yet come forward to contact them via their official channels.
